I returned to Vietnam in 1989, six years
before the U.S.
and Vietnam normalized diplomatic relations. I made all my travel arrangements through a Canadian Travel
Agency. At first, the Vietnamese refused my request to visit Phan Thiet, but
they later
relented. The day I arrived
in Phan Thiet a Communist official told me I was
the first American war veteran to return there since the end of
the War.
