Before leaving for Vietnam, I purchased in a
Brooklyn stationery store a leather bound
bookkeeper's journal that I intended to use as a diary. In Vietnam I carried
it in one of the large trouser pockets of my jungle fatigues. The sturdy journal withstood twelve months of war and
jungle. Today, it's tucked away in a
bedroom drawer. A large part of "Unlucky Moon" is based on my diary entries.

In the back pages of the diary I listed, among
other things, the
names of men from my company who were wounded. One page has a stamp from the National Archives
dated 1987. I was there doing research for the book. |

I also listed names of men killed in
action. Not all, but most of them were from my platoon or company.
